Guide: How to Choose the Right Dining Table Size

If you're planning to buy a new dining table and you're not sure which dimensions are ideal, this guide simplifies the entire process. We explain how to choose the right size, how much space per person you need, how round, rectangular and extendable tables function, and which combinations usually work best in real homes.

What dining table size is right for me?

Most people know which style they like, but are unsure how the table actually works in the space. To make the right choice, you should consider how many people will use it daily, which table shape suits your space, and whether an extendable table is practical if you often host guests.

Question 1: How many people should the table seat?

The first step is determining how many people sit at the table every day. Do you need a table for 2, 4, 6, or perhaps 8 or 10 people? The table must be functional — there is no point in choosing a table that looks beautiful, but cannot seat everyone in your household.

Basic rule: 60 cm (24”) of width per person.

This standard ensures comfortable seating with enough space for a plate, utensils and normal spacing. If your household members are larger framed or you want more comfort, you can allow even more space.

Question 2: Which dining table shape suits you best?

The shape of the table affects both the aesthetics and the functionality of your space. The most common choices are rectangular and round tables, while square and oval tables are less common but very practical in certain layouts.

The shape should match your interior style, but also the layout — door and window positions, walkway width and the overall form of the dining area determine which shape works best.

Question 3: Do you need an extendable table?

If you often host gatherings or dinners — an extendable table is an excellent solution. It takes up less space during daily use, and expands easily when needed.

Most extendable tables are rectangular or square, but there are round models with extension leaves. Some open from the center, while others extend by adding boards to the ends.

Question 4: Are your chairs compatible with the table?

The height of the table and the height of the chair seat are usually standardized (table around 75 cm, seat height 45–48 cm), but there are exceptions that can cause problems.

Chairs with armrests sometimes cannot slide under the tabletop. Certain frame designs can also limit the available seating width.

Rectangular dining table sizes

The most common rectangular table sizes have a width of around 90 cm, while length can vary from 120 to 250 cm or more in larger models. Smaller spaces usually work best with tables between 120 and 160 cm, while larger dining rooms can easily handle 180 cm or more.

Round dining table sizes

With round tables, the diameter determines the number of seats. The 60 cm rule applies here as well — but round seating provides more flexibility.
